Since the Great Dying forty years ago, society invests its limited resources in people with the best genetics—high intelligence, low risk of disease, and good social abilities. Thankfully, Mikayla’s 94 puts her near the top. She’s an Elite—not a Defective, or worse yet, an Expendable exiled to the Toxic Zone. 

As a genetic Elite, fourteen-year-old Mikayla is under intense pressure to live up to her potential. Especially with a mom like hers, who works for the powerful Genetics Institute.
